Where Everybody Knows Your Name: Sunday Brunch at Yorgos

Our Sunday ritual centers around bagels and buddies

For a long time after moving to Norfolk , I never felt like it was a good fit. I missed the cities I had lived in like Boston and Dallas although I did enjoy the climate in Virginia somewhat midway between the two. Lately though, I have come to love the feeling of being part of a routine which revolves around Sunday brunch at our favorite bagel spot, Yorgos

We have been going there for years following them as they moved from one location to another, and changed hands from one owner to another. The consistent pieces have been the bagels and the welcoming atmosphere that are always part of the experience. For a while, I used to bake my  rugelach in their kitchen which they sold to customers looking for something sweet at the end of their meals.

As a family, we have probably eaten more bagels than any other in Norfolk and the restaurant is a favorite venue . Everyone including our vegan son, vegetarian father and all the other omnivores can find something that suits their palates.

Most importantly, Sundays brunch at Yorgos is a weekly ritual that has become a highlight of the week and a great way to feel connected to the other regulars we have come to know. Each week we arrive in the late morning, greet the waitstaff who we have come to know, and place our order before we settle in at the high top window tables where our friends filter in and join us. Some come from the gym, or from church or Hebrew School while others just stroll in as part of a relaxing weekend routine. Sometimes we add Mimosas or Bloody Mary’s to the repast especially if there is something to celebrate like a birthday or anniversary. There are always hugs to greet us and updates on the week behind along with previews of the week to come.

It seems to me that this ritual has made life in Norfolk even sweeter than it was before, as now that we are retired, empty nesters. It helps us feel like we are still connected to young people who have become our friends as well as those, like us, who love the chance to have a cozy spot to gather. Thank you Yorgos for our bagels and our tribe.
